Homeless article had too negative a tone

I am writing in response to the article, "Homeless shelter gives cold shoulder," (Feb. 2), about the homeless people in New London. It had a negative tone about the people and organization that are out there trying to help the homeless. I can tell you from first-hand experience that this is not the case. I was homeless once and went through that same situation. Many of these people simply will not accept or abide by the rules or the help that is needed to maintain a safe environment for them. The services and help of the New London Hospitality Center and the many churches of the area are there to help everyone.

Those who accept the services and help will move on with their lives. Those who continually resist and abuse the help will not. The problem is not with the homeless shelters, it is the way society lumps everyone together as "homeless." Many of them need help with substance abuse, alcohol and drugs. A few have mental or health issues. A few just need a warm bed and a safe place to stay while they regroup from their failures or misfortunes. I for one am thankful for their help.
