Mavis Staples sings at the Kate
The short story: The legendary Mavis Staples sings in concert Saturday at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center.
And he shall be Levon: Staples is fresh off a Sunday performance at the Grammy awards. She and a group of musicians who also included Elton John and Mumford & Sons honored the late Levon Helm by singing "The Weight."
Finally, a Grammy winner: Last year, Staples earned a Grammy for her album "You Are Not Alone." That was, believe it or not, her first Grammy win. She had been nominated twice herself and then a dozen times with The Staple Singers. It wasn't until "You Are Not Alone," which was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, that she won; it was for best Americana album. (The Staples Singers did get a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2005.)
Age is just a state of mind: Staples, who is 73, has plenty of plans for 2013. She'll release a new album and is set to join Bonnie Raitt on an Australian tour.
