Ledyard successfully defends Class M state wrestling title

Milford — Ledyard, with six wrestlers reaching the finals, has clinched the 2013 Class M state tournament championship even before Saturday night’s title matches were to begin.

The Colonels have 220.5 points following the semifinal round at Law High School and lead second-place Avon (132) by nearly 100 points. It is Ledyard’s second straight Class M title and the program’s 19th class championship overall, a state record.

Devon MarcAurele (120 pounds), Brandon Finney (152), Caile Johnson (160), Ryan Wade (170), Colin Grim (182) and Ben Morales (22) will vie for individual titles tonight along with Waterford’s Brentt Smith (112).

Morales provided the highlight of the semifinals, upsetting top-seeded P.J. Sawicki of Bacon Academy 12-4. Sawicki had pinned Morales during the regular season.
