New Haven - U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal is planning to highlight legislation he's proposed to combat the spread of Lyme disease. Blumenthal is scheduled to join Lyme disease advocates and researchers at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven on Monday. Blumenthal said that according to the federal Centers for Disease Control, reported cases of Lyme disease in the U.S. have more than doubled since the CDC began recording cases in 1991, creating the need for an aggressive response on the federal level. Connecticut has one of the highest rates of infection in the country. The tick-borne disease can be hard to diagnose with its vague, flu-like symptoms. Usually, it's easily cured with a few weeks of antibiotics. Those not promptly treated can develop arthritis, meningitis and other serious illnesses.
