Mystic Seaport offers scholarships

Published March 11. 2013 4:00AM

Mystic - Mystic Seaport has scholarships available for its youth sail training and summer camp programs.

Scholarships can be applied to the fees for the Joseph Conrad Summer Sailing Camp, youth Community Sailing programs, and the teen overnight programs on the schooner Brilliant.

The Conrad program is an six-day overnight camp for youths ages 10-15 in which they stay aboard the tall ship Joseph Conrad, sail the museum's fleet of Dyer Dhows, and learn basic and advanced nautical skills.

The community sailing programs run throughout the spring, summer, and fall for youths ages 8 and up.

The program aboard the schooner Brilliant takes up to nine teens, ages 15-18, on either five- or 10-day voyages, where they work together under the guidance of the professional crew to sail hundreds of miles and learn traditional seamanship.

The scholarships are need-based and can cover up to half of the cost. The deadline for applications is May 1. For information, call (860) 572-5322 or go to www.mysticseaport.org/financialaid.
