Groton — The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the death of a student at the Naval Submarine School.

Seaman Apprentice Joshua Allen Woods, 25, was unresponsive when his roommate found him in his bed in their barracks room at the Naval Submarine Base Saturday morning, the Navy said Monday. The roommate called the quarterdeck at the Naval Submarine School and staff there requested help from local emergency medical personnel.

Woods was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, where he was pronounced dead, the Navy said.

Woods, of Memphis, Tenn., arrived at the school in May and graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine School on Jan. 11. He was awaiting orders for his next assignment.

His funeral was today. He was buried with military honors in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
