State police at sobriety checkpoint arrest man on drug charges

North Stonington - A Westerly man was arrested at a sobriety checkpoint Sunday night near Wheeler High School after he was found in possession of more than three pounds of marijuana.

Adonis Cossia, 24, of 106 Southwood Hill Road, was charged with illegal possession of more than four ounces of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, allowing the operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, possession of narcotics with 1,500 feet of a school, possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school and no insurance.

Police said Cossia was a passenger in a car when the vehicle entered the checkpoint at about 10 p.m. Police initially found Cossia in possession of a small amount of marijuana.  A further search of the car found three pounds of marijuana, $400 in cash and 1,200 plastic bags used for packaging. Police also seized the vehicle.

Cossia is being held on a $50,000 bond, pending his arraignment today in New London Superior Court.
