I dispute Gov. Malloy's assertion that the more than 3,000 of us who were in Hartford lobbying our representatives on gun issues were "the fringe of the fringe." On the contrary, he should be proud that democracy is working so effectively in his state. I am a tenured, full-time college professor, currently serving as a department chair in a local university; I have a family that includes two small children, a house, a mortgage, and all the suburban trappings of normalcy.
I simply think I deserve unhampered access to my basic civil rights. I don't see how this should cause anyone to be labeled "the fringe of the fringe."
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who unsucessfully took on super-sized sodas, has proposed a law that would require stores to keep cigarettes behind a curtain or otherwise out of view. What do you think of his latest public-health inititative?
