Connecticut Tigers to host benefit for wounded Norwich police officer

Norwich — The Connecticut Tigers minor league baseball team will host a benefit event March 30 honoring city police Officer Jonathan Ley, who was shot and wounded in an armed standoff Jan. 7, and the Norwich Police Department at the Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium.

The event, from 1 to 5 p.m., includes food provided by restaurants in Norwich and surrounding towns, a softball game featuring the Norwich police and the fire departments, music by the band Malaena, raffles, drinks and family activities. A bounce house, pony rides, a petting zoo and egg hunt are planned.

Tickets in advance are $20 for adults, $35 for couples and $10 for children ages 12 to 16. Children under age 12 are admitted free. Tickets at the door will be $25 for adults and $12 for children 12 to 16.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Ley to cover costs associated with his recovery, and a portion will be donated to the Norwich Police Department to increase the supply of combat tactical gear for officers.

To purchase tickets, call the Tigers at (860) 887-7962 and press 0 for the box office representative. For more information, go to www.officerleybenefit.com.

Ley was shot four times in an armed standoff Jan. 7 at the Cedar Glen Apartments on Cedar Street. Gunman Jason Razzino eventually committed suicide, ending the hours-long standoff. Ley was first transported to The William W. Backus Hospital, then to Yale-New Hospital for three days. After returning home, he was readmitted to the hospital for two days and is recovering at his Voluntown home.
