Local colleges: Mitchell baseball completes three-games sweep of Newbury

New London - Mike Tandy allowed only two hits over seven innings and Mystic's Drew Doyle drove in three runs as Mitchell College completed a three-game series sweep of Newbury College with a 9-5 victory Monday in a New England College Conference baseball game.

Tandy gave up two runs and struck out three to earn his first victory of the season for the Mariners (6-5, 3-0) while Doyle, a sophomore from Fitch, had two hits, including a two-run single and a triple.

Gavin LaLima, a sophomore from Waterford, also drove in a run for Mitchell with a base hit in the second.

Newbury is 3-8, 0-3.

In another game:

• Matt Martinez had three hits, three runs and six RBI and started a double play to end the game with the bases loaded as Avery Point beat Kirkwood CC of Iowa, 14-13, at Vero Beach, Fla.

Kirkwood had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Martinez, playing right field, caught the second out and threw out the baserunner at the plate to end the game.

New London's Matt Greene had three hits, four RBI and scored for the Pointers (5-2) while Nick DeLotto added two hits, a run and an RBI.

Kirkwood is 8-2.
