Ten players and coaches, including state championship football coach Bob Mitchell, will be added to the Stonington High School Athletic Hall of Fame on April 27 at the high school.

Mitchell led the Bears to the Class SS state title in 1991, the program's only CIAC-sponsored championship. A liefelong Westerly resident, Mitchell is now assistant superintendent of schools in Cumberland, R.I., and is a member of the Westerly High Athletic Hall of Fame.

Other honorees are Francis "Pete" Connors (Class of 1916, football, basketball, baseball), Vernon Hauschild (1939, football, track), Carl Kieburg (1943, football, baseball), Tim Sisk (1967, basketball, golf), Jeff Woodworth (1985, soccer, basketball, baseball), Jackie Kupka (1995, field hockey, basketball, softball), George H. Crouse (1999, basketball, tennis), Becky Alfonso (2000, field hockey, basketball, softball) and Mark Brissette (2002, cross country, indoor and outdoor track).

Connors was a member of the Bears' first football (1914) and baseball (1915) teams to win Eastern Connecticut Conference titles and went on to coach both sports at the school. He went on to serve in World War I as a member of the U.S. Navy, was a state representative and owned and operated Connors Drug Store in Stonington for 40 years.

Hauschild was a member of Stonington track teams which won the ECC title in 1937 and the Connecticut Class B championship in 1936, 1937 and 1939. At the 1939 state meet, Hauschild won the 200-yard low hurdles, the high jump and was a member of the winning 800-yard relay team. He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1944 is a veteran of World War II.

Kieburg earned All-ECC and all-state honors for the football team as a senior, with the Bears winning the league title and finishing with a record of 9-1-1. He joined the Navy and spent World War II stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

Sisk's golf teams at Stonington went 33-1 in his three seasons, winning ECC titles in 1965-67 and the Connecticut Class B title in 1966. Sisk went on to play golf at Northern Michigan University and is still active in golf, winning eight club championships at Elmridge Golf Course. He taught in North Stonington for 34 years and coached golf there for 30.

Woodworth received the Tuite Cup as a senior as Stonington's most accomplished male athlete in the graduating class. Woodworth was a four-year varsity starter on the soccer team and an all-state pick as a senior who went on to play at St. Michael's College.

Kupka was a two-time Class M all-state selection as the catcher for the softball team during a span in which the Bears won the 1995 Class M state championship and were runners-up in 1993 and 1994. She also played softball for the University of New Haven, earning All-New England Collegiate Conference and all-region honors in 1997 and breaking the career home run record.

Crouse, the son of longtime tennis coach George Crouse, also won the Tuite Cup as the top male athlete in his senior class. He was a two-time ECC tournament finalist and a finalist in the 1999 State Open. Crouse went on to play at No. 1 singles for Fairfield University and is still active in the sport, serving as the head pro at the Moorestown (N.J.) Tennis Club.

Alfonso earned 10 varsity letters, serving as captain and earning first team All-ECC honors in field hockey, basketball and softball as a senior to win the school's Athletic Achievement Cup. She led the field hockey team to three ECC championships, named second team all-state as a senior, and was the leading scorer in field hockey and basketball as a junior and senior. Alsonso played field hockey at Eastern Connecticut State and is a physical education teacher at Montville High.

Brissette was second in Class M during the 2001 cross country season, leading the Bears to a state title, and went on to a 24th-place finish at the State Open. Brissette was the Wendy's Heisman Award winner for Connecticut in 2002, when he was also named a CIAC Scholar-Athlete. He was valedictorian of his class and continued his running career at Dartmouth College.
