Norwich - Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has named The William W. Backus Hospital a Blue Distinction Center in Knee and Hip Replacement, the hospital announced Monday.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care – which expanded recently to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety, as well as new cost-efficiency measures, the hospital said.

“Earning this designation required physician leadership, integration with multiple surgeons and we had to incorporate our quality improvement specialists who gathered relevant data and performance metrics as part of the application,” said Jim O’Dea, vice president of clinical service line development at Backus. “Our high quality outcomes, delivered in a cost-effective manner demonstrate again how Backus, working together with our medical staff can deliver the best possible care, close to home.”
