Occult rock with Absu

Published April 11. 2013 4:00AM

It's always fun when metal musicians adopt fake names to further designate the extent of their deviltry.

The members of Absu, a Dallas-based international act that plays "Mythological Occult Metal," are really good at this name stuff. For example, amongst the numerous dudes in and out of the lineup over the years are Kashshapxu, Equitant Ifernain, Vastator Terrarum, Black Massith, Mezzadurus and, for some reason, a drummer called Daniel Benbow. (Not sure what his problem was/wasn't.)

Current Absu members, who headline Friday at the El 'n' Gee Club, are Proscriptor (vocals/drums), Ezezu (bass/vocals) and Vis Crom (guitar). Their latest albums are "Abzu," released in 2011, and, ah, "Absu," which came out two years before that. It's also cool to note they refer to their gigs as "live rituals."

Also performing on the live ritual are Cold Northern Vengeance, Fenrismaw, Murrum, Black Table, and GravesideService.

Absu, 6 p.m. Friday, El 'n' Gee Club, 86 Golden St., New London; $12 advance, $15 door; (860) 437-3800.
