There was a time when the Athens, Ga., music scene was as fertile as any in the country. You had REM, as well as a royal court of the B-52s, Drive-By Truckers, Dreams So Real, Love Tractor, Pylon and Widespread Panic.
Another great band was Vigilantes of Love, founded by and starring guitarist/songwriter/vocalist Bill Mallonee (above). After a nice run and considerable star power in Europe, VOL disbanded and Mallonee started a career as an e'er traveling troubadour working the solo circuit. He's continued to release competitive CDs, including the just-out, Paste magazine-lauded "Amber Waves."
Mallonee appears Sunday at 7 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Essex, 10 Prospect St., Essex, and fans can anticipate an across-the-boards representation of his rich career. For info, call (860) 767-8623, fbcinessex.org.
