H.S. softball roundup: Fitch nips NFA 2-1 in Luzzio's return

Norwich - Alana Luzzio, a Class L all-state selection last season for the Fitch High School softball team, returned to the mound Wednesday for the first time since suffering an injury to her left leg early in the season, picking up a nine-inning victory over Norwich Free Academy.

Luzzio also had the game-winning hit in the ninth for Fitch, which topped NFA 2-1 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division.

Luzzio, who last pitched three innings in an opening day loss to Stamford, struck out eight, walked three and allowed seven hits, while also going 2-for-4 with a double. Her single in the ninth scored Katherine Georgetti, who reached on an error. Fitch is 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the division.

NFA (3-3, 0-3) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Emily Arico and Caitlyn Dubreuil had two hits each for the Wildcats, while Sam DeVito and Megan Weir split the pitching duties, allowing two unearned runs.

"I won't say she's fully back 100 percent," Fitch coach Kate Prpich said of Luzzio. "We've been trying to not have her do too much too soon. It's early. Let it get better. But was important for her to get some work in."

Luzzio was 12-5 with a 1.18 earned run average last year and hit .531.
