The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has scheduled two public hearings over the next three weeks on Deepwater Wind’s application for a dredge permit to construct five six-megawatt wind turbines and a transmission system off the south shore of Block Island.

The turbines would be connected with a submarine cable and a 34.5-volt transmission cable to a connection point on Block Island. From there the cable would go ashore to a new substation. Deepwater would also construct a 34.5-volt submarine transmission cable from Block Island to the Rhode Island mainland at Narragansett.

The five turbines would be located three miles off the southeast coast of Block Island in state territorial waters.

The Army Corps of Engineers is also reviewing the application and will participate in the hearings to explain its role and the permit review process.

The first hearing will take place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at Narragansett Town Hall, 25 Fifth Ave.

The second will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. May 8 at New Shoreham Town Hall, 16 Old Town Road, Block Island.
