Norwich - Police have charged a 22-year-old Norwich man with manslaughter in the May 2 death of a 13-month-old girl who was in his care.

Police charged Michael A. Rios, 22, of 176 Elizabeth St., with first-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a minor.

The arrest was made by warrant following investigation by detectives. Norwich police Sgt. James Tetreault said the child sustained injuries while in the care of Rios, who brought the child to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich on May 2.

Because of the significance of the injuries, the child was flown by Life Star helicopter from Norwich to The Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, where she died, police said. Tetreault declined to discuss the case in any further detail.

Rios was released after posting a $100,000 surety bond and due to appear May 16 in Norwich Superior Court.
