Pianist Eva Virsik performs at the La Grua Center

Published May 09. 2013 4:00AM

Pianist Eva Virsik will perform a recital Saturday at the La Grua Center that showcases works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Wagner, and Suchon.

She'll lead things off with Eugen Suchon's "Metamorphoses." She is performing that piece as a way of honoring the 20th anniversary of Slovakia's independence; Suchon is from Slovakia, and so is Virsik.

She'll also perform Beethoven's Appassionata sonata, Schumann's Papillons, and Liszt's piano transcription of Wagner's Liebestod from "Tristan und Isolde."

Virsik has developed a long, impressive resume since she began performing as a youth in Slovakia. She made her Carnegie Hall debut five years ago. She has performed around the world - at the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, at the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and on tour with the Orchestre National de Lille.

Eva Virsik, 5 p.m. Saturday, La Grua Center, 32 Water St., #7 Stonington Commons Community, Stonington Borough; free, suggested donation $10; lagruacenter.org.

Should the Guantanamo prison be closed?
No. I believe that information from detainees has saved American lives.
Yes. Pres. Obama said this week that the prison is contrary to who we are and I agree.
No. Keeping the prison running means there are fewer people out there who want to harm Americans and our allies.
What's the wait? Pres. Bush announced he wanted to close it. Obama campaigned on the issue. Why hasn't it happened yet?
I don't know. All of these choices are black and white and don't represent how I feel.
