Bridgeport (AP) — A Bridgeport man has been arraigned on murder and kidnapping charges in the killing of an Eastern Connecticut State University student.

Thirty-year-old Jermaine Richards is accused of killing his girlfriend, 20-year-old Alyssiah Wiley, who disappeared April 20 near the Willimantic campus and was found dead Friday in a wooded area of Trumbull. She was a sophomore psychology major.

Richards was in handcuffs and leg shackles when he appeared Monday in Bridgeport Superior Court. A judge set bail at $1 million and continued the case to June 25.

Richards didn't enter a plea, but his lawyer says he plans to plead not guilty.

Several people in the courtroom were wearing T-shirts with Wiley's picture on them.

Richards surrendered to authorities Saturday after police obtained a warrant for his arrest.
