    Open the report

The public has been waiting patiently for nearly six months for the State Police to issue a report of the findings of their investigation into the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012. The police stated months ago that the report would be released in June. Now it appears that it won't be released until September, at the earliest. According to published reports, the police need more time to "redact" FBI reports.

Frankly, these delays are getting ridiculous. The public, the legislature, and even the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission that you (Gov. Malloy) created, all desperately need information about what happened so that intelligent decisions and recommendations can be made and, we hope, prevent another such tragedy. Since when in a Democratic society do we let prosecutors and police decide what and when the public should know about a case that will not be prosecuted? There is simply no good excuse for not releasing the underlying investigation materials immediately.

We are confident that you agree that there is no excuse for further delay in the release of the state police investigatory materials, other than the crime scene photos and 911 calls that you believe should be exempt from disclosure. While we respectfully disagree with your position on those particular issues, it seems that we share common ground when it comes to the prompt release of other Sandy Hook information in the possession of the state police.

Accordingly, we urge you to propose legislation - for immediate consideration this session - that would require the disclosure of the state police files in the Sandy Hook case.
