Preston - A portion of Route 2 in Preston has reopened following a head-on collision between two vehicles Friday afternoon that shut the road down for several hours.

Preston Fire Marshal Thomas Casey said first responders arrived at the scene of the crash to find three victims, including one person who had to be extricated from a vehicle. Two patients were transported to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.

The accident occurred just east of Hewitt Road, and both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage. State police were still out at the scene at 10 p.m.

The state Department of Transportation reported that the accident occurred at 5:25 p.m. The road was reopened as of 10:40 p.m.

State police provided no further information.
