    Garage-rock cool with The Fleshtones

Long after many four-decade-old bands have surrendered to the temptation to wheeze through the hits of yore, the Fleshtones continue to pump out vital garage-fumed rock.

Yes, early works like "Roman Gods" and "Hexbreaker" are pretty much immortal within the genre. But, in recent years, the 'tones have released such competitive records as "Beachhead," "Take a Good Look" and their latest album, "Brooklyn Sound Solution" - the latter of which features the legendary Lenny Kaye - and all shimmer in ragged glory.

In performance, they're relentlessly cool - which is why you should be in attendance when they headline the Saturday lineup at the 7th Shoreline Music Festival in the Hygienic Art Park, with two sets sandwiched around Sailfest fireworks.

    - RICK KOSTER

The Fleshtones, 8:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday, Hygienic Art Park, 79-83 Bank St., New London; $10 donation suggested; (860) 443-8001. hygienic.org.
