East Lyme - Resident Trooper Sgt. Bill Blanchette said the incident that occurred in the police department parking lot on Main Street Thursday afternoon involved the untimely death of a 75-year-old man.

Blanchette said there was no criminal aspect to the case.

Police were notified of the incident at about 3 p.m. when a passerby reported hearing gunfire. They found the man's body inside a white van in the parking lot and conducted an investigation to ensure there was no foul play. The investigators determined the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
