Ledyard, Valley/OL win H.S. football openers
JoJo Schumaker rushed for 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Ledyard High School opened its 2013 football season with a 42-6 nonleague victory over RHAM on Thursday night at Bill Mignault Field.
The victory was the 100th of Jim Buonocore's coaching career.
Jordan Kowalski also had a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Colonels while quarterback Ty Ebdon was 7-for-13 in his debut for 134 yards and a 49-yard touchdown to River Thomas.
In other opening week action involving local schools:
Phil Cohen threw three touchdown passes and Chris Chiappa had three sacks and a fumble recovery to lead Valley Regional/Old Lyme to a 34-0 victory over Hyde in New Haven.
East Lyme trailed Middletown 7-0 just 1 minute and 12 seconds into the second quarter when heavy rain and severe lightning suspended play. The game will be resumed on Sunday in Middletown at 1:30 p.m.
