    Layoffs of EB carpenters delayed

Groton — The 55 carpenters at Electric Boat whose last day was supposed to be this Friday will now work for six more weeks.

EB notified the carpenters that their jobs would be extended to Nov. 8 because of additional work in a variety of areas, Robert Hamilton, company spokesman, said Tuesday.

EB has issued layoff notices to 234 employees, including the carpenters, since July because of the Navy’s decisions to scrap rather than repair the USS Miami and to use workers from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, instead of EB workers, to repair the USS Springfield.
