H.S. field hockey: Stonington wins another ECC title

Stonington players celebrate a 6-2 victory over Killingly on Tuesday night at home, a victory that avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to the Redgals and clinched the Bears' 22nd ECC title in 23 seasons.

Stonington - Being in a bad mood led to good things for the Stonington High School field hockey team Tuesday night.

The Bears played Killingly with the Eastern Connecticut Conference title on the line. The Bears had lost to the Redgals earlier in the month.

They also lost their last game to Avon on Saturday.

Elizabeth Morrison scored the first of her three goals 34 seconds into the game as Stonington blitzed Killingly, 6-2, to win its 22nd ECC title in 23 seasons.

"I think we had a lot working for us tonight," Bears coach Jenna Tucchio said. "We were definitely a little bitter about that loss up at Killingly (1-0 on Oct. 9). It wasn't one of our best days. And we lost Saturday to Avon (3-0). We didn't execute when we needed to execute.

"I think the girls were really intent on avenging that loss to Killingly. … They also knew that if they won they clinched the ECC championship. They had a lot of fule to the fire."

Molly Crowley, Meagan Dreher and Abby Blanchard scored for the Bears (12-2, 11-1) and Tia Boyce and Morrison each had an assist. Cameron Dreher had four saves and Annie Knizeski added one.

Alyssa Rainey and Madison Weaver scored for Killingly and Kristy Gallant had 22 saves.
