Old Lyme - Democrats swept Tuesday's elections, garnering the highest number of votes in all of the contested races, including the five open seats on the Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education.

With the incumbents on the three-member Board of Selectmen running unopposed, the race to watch was the Board of Education, where seven candidates vied for four full terms on the board and three others sought election to a two-year spot.

Rick Goulding, a physician who was cross-endorsed, garnered the highest number of votes for the school board, with 1,401. He was elected to a full term along with fellow Democrats Jean Wilczynski, Diane Linderman and Nancy Lucas Edson. Sarah Smalley, also a Democrat, won the two-year spot, prevailing over Republican Russ Gomes, who had served on the board for 16 years, and Republican Stephen Spooner.

First Selectman Bonnie Reemsnyder, elected to a second term with 1,167 votes, said the Democrats had worked "very, very hard" on the election. Republicans had dominated town politics for years, but Democrats have steadily won more spots on town boards and commissions leading up to Tuesday's landslide.

"We had excellent, excellent candidates," Reemsnyder said. The school board is tasked with carrying out a multi-year redistrict plan, a new system of teacher evaluations and ongoing evaluation of school safety.

Turnout was relatively low Tuesday, with 1,599 of the town's 6,068 registered voters casting ballots.
