    Irish pub, not grub

Gluten-free rotini with grilled veggies, fresh plum tomatoes, basil and goat cheese at Brazen Hen in Westerly.

On our first visit to the Brazen Hen in Westerly, we were a bit disappointed that for an Irish pub it didn't have many traditional entrees. Bangers and mash, shepherd's pie and fish and chips were it. So that's what we ordered.

On our next visit, we got more adventuresome and now agree it's a wonderful thing when an Irish pub pushes the envelope.

I had a cashew-crusted chicken ($17) that was served with a pineapple mango salsa and hoisin glaze, with jasmine rice and veggies. Every bite was delicious.

Betty ordered rotini with grilled veggies, fresh plum tomatoes, basil and goat cheese ($18). She raved about it. The rotini was made with quinoa. It's easy to miss because it's the last item on the menu and it's advertised as gluten free, which might turn off those not on a special diet.

Forget the shepherd's pie — these were outstanding.
