"Anchorman 2": Swapping joke for joke

This is genius. "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" will be back in movie theaters this week — but it’ll be a little different.

Scratch that. It’ll be a LOT different.

Almost all the jokes in the original version will be replaced with new ones.

See, the actors all improvised a great deal while making the comedy, and director Adam McKay has gone in and switched nearly every joke here — totalling 763 new funny lines. That’s a lot of chances to be newly funny.

This is the first time something like this has been done. At first, the creative team planned to use the alternate takes as a video extra, as is often done. But McKay, star/co-writer Will Ferrell and their editors decided to try subbing new jokes into the existing film. Paramont execs then pushed for a theatrical rerelease.

McKay told The New York Times that he doesn’t think this new version is better than the original. It must, though, be a little raunchier because it’s rated R, while the earlier version was a PG-13.

And it’s longer, about 20 minutes more than the 2-hour original.

Which explains the new, expanded title: "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues: Super-Sized R-Rated Version."

What do you think of the new "Anchorman 2"?
