Middlebury Vt. — Justina Germano scored 10 minutes into sudden death overtime to give eighth-seeded Connecticut College a stunning 2-1 upset over No. 1 Middlebury in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's hockey tournament on Saturday.

Goalie Kelsie Fralick made 39 saves for the Camels (10-11-3) who advance to next Saturday's semifinals against No. 4 Bowdoin at Williams College. Bowdoin advanced with a 2-1 win over No. 6 Wesleyan. Middlebury (17-4-4) will now await for a possible at-large bid into the NCAA Division III tournament when the field is announced on March 10.

Conn led 1-0 in the first period when Ashley Anctil scored her eighth goal of the season (Stephanie Izzi assisted), but Middlebury tied the game 31 seconds into the second period on a goal by Madeline Joyce. The Panthers outshot the Camels 40-20, but Fralick was brilliant in goal, stopping Joyce on a breakaway in the first period and making a flurry of saves during a Middlebury power play in the third period.

Middlebury also failed to convert on power play early in overtime before Germano won a faceoff to Shelley Moore in the corner, who blasted a shot in front of the net that Germano redirected into the goal from in front.

Men's hockey

• No. 2 Amherst scored the last three goals of the game to rally for a 4-2 win over No. 7 Connecticut College in the NESCAC tournament quarterfinals. Conn (9-14-2) took a 2-1 lead when Joe Giordano scored 1:08 into the third period, with JC Cangelosi and Greg Liautaud assisting. Mike Sinsigalli's second-period goal pulled Conn even at 1-1. Mike Petchonka made 26 saves and Zach Jones also had an assist for Conn.

Men's basketball

• Third-seeded New Hampton defeated No. 2 St. Thomas More 85-74 in the semifinals of the New England Prep School Class AAA tournament in Worcester, Mass. Cane Broome led the Chancellors with 19 points and six assists while Eric Paschall scored 13 points, Calvin Crawford 11 and Josh Williams finished with eight points and seven rebounds. T-More plays Putnam Science on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the first round of the National Prep Championships.

Wrestling

• Two Coast Guard wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the championship bracket in the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional tournament in Middletown. Senior Luke Taylor (174 pounds), won a pair of decisions in his attempt to qualify for the nationals for the first time while junior Nate Giorgio (133) also won twice as he attempts to earn his third straight trip to the nationals. In addition, freshman Mike Palomba (157) went 2-1 and remains alive in the consolation bracket. The tourney concludes today at Wesleyan.

Indoor track

• Conn College's Mike LeDuc placed seventh in the mile (4:07.52) at the All-New England Championship in Boston, a meet featuring athletes from Divisions I, II and III. In addition, the Conn women's distance medley relay team of Bella Franz, Amanda Jacobsen, Caroline Leonard and Kim Bolick set a school record (11:54.79) as did the 4x400 relay team of Gianno Rocchio, Franz, Leonard and Jacobsen (4:04.57).

• Coast Guard's Adam Scalesse broke the second record for the second straight day and placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.05 seconds) to earn All-New England honors. Also for the Bears, Clay Kosack earned All-New England honors by placing sevneth in the hepathlon (4.172 points) while the 4x400 relay team of Ben Hannon, James Dawkins, Kelcey Smith and Scalesse broke a 33-year-old school record (3:18.72).

For the Coast Guard women, Beth Gollin set a school record in the 3,000 (10:14.74).

Men's lacrosse

• Tyler Hegarty's second goal with 2:40 remaining gave Conn College a 10-9 win over Roger Williams in its season opener. Briggs Barton added two goals and two assists for the Camels, Kevin Dachille also scored twice and Derek Bertolini added one goal and two assists.

• Demetre Lyras and Fitch's Jordan Cook scored three goals apiece as Mitchell defeated Anna Maria 14-8 at New London High School. Cook also had a pair of assists for the Mariners (1-1) while Dan DiGioia had two goals and three assists.

Baseball

• Coast Guard Academy was swept by Merchant Marine as both teams opened their seasons. Host Merchant Marine won the opener 8-3 and the second game 9-3, clinching the Superintendent's Trophy. Coast Guard's Mark Behne had two hits and drove in a run in the first game and teammate Dave Wolinski hit a three-run homer in the second game.
