Mariners in the spotlight

• Mitchell College senior David Klapp earned New England Collegiate Conference player of the week honors and goalie J.D. LeMay received the top rookie award for men's lacrosse.

Klapp is the team's leading scorer with seven goals in four games. He scored the game-winner against Becker College and added two assists last week.

In his first collegiate win, LeMay stopped 13 shots in a 14-8 victory over Anna Maria and then made 19 saves against Becker. The Mariners are 2-2 overall.

• Forward Kate Mulloy is the first Mitchell College player to be selected to participate in the New England Women's Basketball Association Senior All-Star Classic. The game will be held on March 29 at Smith College.

"Kate is deserving of this honor," Mitchell coach MaryLynn Skarzenski said. "She enjoyed a solid two-year career at Mitchell, highlighted by a great senior season. Being selected as one of the top seniors in New England is a good way to culminate her career."

Mulloy, one of 22 players chosen to compete, averaged 10.7 points and 7.2 rebounds in her final season, leading the Mariners to a 16-10 overall mark and a second place finish in the conference. Mitchell reached the conference tourney semifinals for the fourth time in six years.

Connecticut College's Tara Gabelman also will play in the Senior All-Star Classic.

Tracking the Bears

• Coast Guard Academy's Adam Scalesse has earned the fourth seed in the 60 meter hurdles in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships set for Friday. He will be one of six returning All-Americans in the field.

Scalesse won the 60 hurdles at the Division III ECAC Championship on Saturday, finishing in 8.12 seconds to narrowly beat Terrence Gibson (8.13) of Worcester State. Gibson, who also is headed to nationals, won two other meetings in the Division III New England Championship and Open New England.

• Sarah Sorenson was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week after leading the Bears to two wins last week without allowing an earned run in 9.1 innings. A converted outfielder, she was pitching for the first time in almost two years.

Camel highlights

• The Conn College women's hockey team finished a successful season with a 2-0 loss to Williams College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday The Camels fell to 11-12-3 overall. Goalie Kelsie Fralick had 26 saves and ended up with a 2.20 goals against average. Courtney Dumont finished her career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 48 goals and senior Olivia Farrell leaves the program with a school-record 44 assists.

Around the region

• Southern Connecticut State University's Shatajah Wattely and Sonja Campbell, two Montville High School graduates, were named to the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field All-Region team. Wattely competes in the sprints and Campbell in the shot put.

Wattely qualified to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 200 meters.

• Several southeastern Connecticut athletes are playing for the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team. Sophomore Nate Wilson of Norwich scored six goals and senior Ryan Foster of Ledyard had four in WCSU's 25-11 rout of Manhattanville College last week. Junior Kevin Seery of East Lyme made eight saves. Freshman Zack Bartlett of East Lyme also is on the roster.

• Playing for St. Michael's College, junior Hannah Benoit, a St. Bernard graduate, won her match at No. 5 singles in a 6-3 loss to Adelphi University on Saturday. It was her season debut.

• Stonington graduate Brendan Wilkins was named the captain for the Ithaca College men's track and field team for the outdoor season.
