    Local roundup: Avery Point stretches winning streak to eight with sweep

    Norwich - The UConn-Avery Point baseball team stretched its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of Northern Essex Sunday at Dodd Stadium.

    The Pointers (13-3) won the opener 4-1 and the second game 8-2.

    Chris Gonnelli (2-0) allowed three hits over six innings to pick up the win in the first game, striking out six with one walk. Diondrey Sapp had two hits for the Pointers. In the second game, Baylor LaPointe (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the win, striking out five with no walks. Stonington's Connor Buckley had three hits and scored twice and Alex Miller, Nick Landell (two runs) and Andrew Hinckley had two hits each.

    In other games:

    • Mitchell College managed just three hits in a 4-1 loss to Newbury in the New England Collegiate Conference. Rafael Garcia singled home Peter McTernan in the fifth for Mitchell (6-6-1, 3-3).

    • Coast Guard was swept by MIT in a New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Bears lost the opener 3-2 and the second game 6-4 in 12 innings. Dan Sabourin and Blake Thompson each doubled and drove in a run in the opener for Coast Guard (4-8, 0-2). Matt Hanks singled and doubled, Thompson doubled and Sabourin scored twice in the second game.

    Softball

    • Former St. Bernard standout Rivkah Berkman had three hits for Mitchell College as the Mariners split a NECC doubleheader with Elms, winning the opener 5-4 and losing the second game 5-4. Lindsey Romagnino scored on an error in the top of the seventh in the first game to break a 4-4 tie. Jenny Groman scored three runs, drove in two runs and stole two bases for Mitchell (5-10, 1-1).

    Swimming

    • Connecticut College finished up its four days at the NCAA Division III Championship at Indianapolis Saturday night. Julia Pielock was sixth in the women's 100-yard freestyle in 51.02 and Loring Bowen was eighth in the men's 200 backstroke in 1:49.19. Pielock and Bowen earned All-America status with their finishes.

    Conn finished 12th in the men's competition with 117.5 points and the women were 16th with 56 points. The men's 400 freestyle relay team of Bowen, Michael Fothergill, Drew Andre' and Sam Gill finished 12th (3:02.64) and the women's 400 freestyle relay team of Skye Qi Marigold, Rachel Wilson, Pielock and Sam Pierce were 14th in 3:28.94.

    Men's outdoor track

    • Conn College had four athletes place among the top eight in the 5,000-meter race at Saturday's West Chester (Pa.) Invitational. Drew Majkut finished third (16:07.07), Ben Bosworth was fourth (16:15.98), Zander Mintz was fifth (16:21.43), Niall Williams was seventh (16:38.81) and Alejandro Hernandez was eighth (16:42.84). In addition, Old Lyme's Ian Rathkey was third in the 800 (2:00.73) while the 4x400 meter relay team of Nick Fischetti, Aaron Davis, Sam McKeown and Dan Gossels was eighth (3:39.64).

    Women's outdoor track

    • Conn College's Lauren Kennedy won the javelin (114 feet, 9 inches) at the West Chester (Pa.) Invite on Saturday, qualifying for the New England Division III meet along with Sam Pevear, who was second in the discus (118-9). Peaver was also second in the shot put (34-5¼) and third in the hammer (125-10) while Emily Winter (18:56.20), Anna Laurence (19:38) and Nicole Adam (19:49.27) placed second, fifth and sixth respectively in the 5,000.

    In addition, Marina Stuart was second in the triple jump (32-8¼) and third in the pole vault (8-½), Amanda Jacobsen was second in the pole vault (8-6), Kelsey McGinnis was sixth in the 1,500 (5:04.10) and Tori Kenyon was sixth in the 100 dash (13.42).

    Women's water polo

    • Connecticut College went 1-2 Saturday at San Diego, beating Chapman 7-6 and losing to San Diego State (24-5) and Cal State East Bay (11-5). Nicky Jasbon had eight goals and two assists, Kate Jacobson had four goals, Isabelle Baneux had two goals and five assists and Kelsey Millward had two goals and six steals for Conn (5-5).
