    NHL roundup

    Rangers 5, Oilers 0

New York played the kind of defense that it’s going to need come playoff time.

Backup goaltender Cam Talbot stopped 26 shots for his third career shutout and Rick Nash and Mats Zuccarello scored two goals apiece Sunday to lead the Rangers to their sixth win in seven games, a victory over second-to-last place Edmonton.

Derek Brassard also scored for the Rangers, who had two short-handed goals in the game to move two points up on the Philadelphia Flyers for second place in the Metropolitan Division.

"On some nights you need some bounces and we got a couple tonight," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "Our penalty killing gave us two big goals tonight, which was good to see.

"We hadn't played as well as we would have liked defensively in (a 4-3 loss to) Calgary on Friday. We were a lot better tonight."

Center Derek Stepan, who had three assists in the game, agreed.

"We tightened it up and moving forward we have to play that way because the points are so big," Stepan said. "We have played a good defensive game over the last few weeks and that is what is going to lead to our offense and help us win."

The Rangers tied their franchise record for road wins with 24 this season.

The Oilers have lost four of their last five games.

Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said a team can't surrender two short-handed goals in a game and expect to have success.

"We've given up the most short-handed goals this season and it's something that we can't afford to do," he said.

It was the ninth time this season that the Oilers have been shut out.

New York took a 1-0 lead with 3:30 to play in the opening frame when Zuccarello tipped in Anton Stralman's shot on a play that goalie Ben Scrivens argued involved a high stick. It was reviewed and Zuccarello got his 16th goal of the season.

The Rangers had eight first-period shots, while the Oilers mustered three on Talbot.

New York took a 2-0 lead 4:38 into the second period on the power play, when Brassard's knuckler from the sideboards seemed to catch Scrivens off guard.

The Rangers took a three-goal advantage 9:07 into the period when Nash threw a backhand from behind the goal-line and it hit off Scrivens and went in for Nash's 24th goal of the season.

New York made it 4-0 with 6:34 left in the second period on a short-handed two-on-one break with Nash converting a pass from Derek Stepan.

The Rangers upped their lead to 5-0 on another short-handed goal four minutes into the third period when defender Philip Larsen overcommitted to covering Stepan. He was able to earn his third assist with a feed to Zuccarello in front of the net for his second goal. It was the 13th short-handed goal the Oilers have allowed this season.

    Penguins 4, Blackhawks 1

Sidney Crosby had two goals in the final five minutes, helping Pittsburgh to a victory over injury-riddled Chicago.

The Blackhawks also lost captain Jonathan Toews to an upper-body injury in the second period. Toews was hit hard by Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik and was holding his left arm on the bench before heading down the runway.

James Neal and Lee Stempniak also scored for the Penguins, who won their second straight and snapped a three-game home losing streak. Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves in his 36th victory of the season.

Orpik drilled Toews in the corner with 6:30 remaining in the second period while the two went for a loose puck.

It's been a rough stretch for injuries for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who will be without star forward Patrick Kane for the rest of the regular season due to a lower-body injury. Bryan Bickell is out with an upper-body injury but is expected to return soon.

Sheldon Brookbank scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost three straight in regulation for the

    Red Wings 3, Lightning 2

David Legwand had a goal and an assist, and Detroit held off Tampa Bay to move into seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist also scored for Detroit, and Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 shots.

Valtteri Filppula and Sami Salo scored for Tampa Bay and Ben Bishop made 27 saves.

Legwand assisted on Nyquist's goal that gave Detroit a 2-1 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first. He made it 3-1 on a power-play score with 3:24 left in the second period, tipping in Johan Franzen's shot for his 13th goal.

    Predators 4, Capitals 3 (SO)

Craig Smith scored the only goal in the shootout to lead Nashville over Washington.

Patric Hornqvist scored two goals and Shea Weber added another for Nashville, which has won two of three.

Troy Brouwer scored twice and Nicklas Backstrom had the other goal for Washington. The Capitals have lost three straight.

In the tiebreaker, Nashville goaltender Carter Hutton denied all three Washington shooters.

    Senators 6, Flames 3

Milan Michalek and Kyle Turris had two goals apiece, leading the Senators to the win.

Jared Cowen gave Ottawa a lift with a tiebreaking goal on a wrist shot 1:12 into the third period, and Clarke MacArthur made it 5-3 with a tip-in at 12:22. Turris then scored his 25th goal into an empty net.

Robin Lehner made 37 saves as the Senators won back-to-back games on home ice for the first time since they won three straight in late December and early January.

Matt Stajan, Paul Byron and Sean Monahan scored for the Flames, and Karri Ramo made 31 saves.
