Stewart named to Wooden All-American team

UConn's Breanna Stewart goes for a layup against BYU's Morgan Bailey during a NCAA regional semifinal on March 29 in Lincoln, Neb.

UConn's Breanna Stewart was named to the John Wooden All-American team on Wednesday, the only sophomore named to the five-player team.

Stewart, the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, is now eligible to win the prestigious Wooden Award, which is presented annually to a player who combines athletic and academic excellence. The winner will be announced during the 38th annual Wooden Gala on April 12 in Los Angeles.

Joining Stewart on the team were four seniors - Notre Dame guard Kayla McBride, Stanford forward Chiney Ogwumike, Baylor guard Odyssey Sims and Maryland forward Alyssa Thomas. McBride, Ogwumike and Thomas will join Stewart in the upcoming NCAA Final Four, which begins Sunday night in Nashville.

Stewart, who was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday, has already been named to the USBWA All-American team and is a finalist for the Wade and Naismith trophies that are award annually during the Final Four to the nation's best player. The 6-foot-4 forward leads the unbeaten Huskies in scoring (19.4), is second in rebounding (8.1) and has 106 blocked shots.

Stewart is the fifth UConn player to make the Wooden team.

Maya Moore was selected four straight seasons (2008-11) while Tina Charles (2010), Renee Montgomery (2009) and Diana Taurasi (2004) were each selected once.
