    Local college roundup: Conn College falls to Amherst

    New London - Amherst College scored the last 10 goals of the match, pulling away for a 17-6 win over Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference men's lacrosse match Tuesday.

    Tyler Hegarty of Conn scored a pair of goals in the third quarter which pulled the Camels within a goal at 7-6 before Amherst's outburst.

    Hegarty had three goals, Derek Bertolini scored twice and Old Lyme's Thomas Woessner also scored for Conn (7-5, 3-4). JR Hartgers and Briggs Barton had two assists each for Conn.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Amherst took a 5-1 halftime lead and went on to beat Connecticut College 11-6 in a NESCAC match. Taylor Thomas and Lowell Abbott had two goals each, Hannah Donegan had a goal and an assist and Tina Balzotti also scored for Conn (4-8, 0-7).

    Baseball

    • Andrew Zapata pitched six strong innings for the win as UConn beat Northeastern 2-0. Zapata (2-1) allowed two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Patrick Ruotolo earned his first save by allowing one hit over the final three innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Aaron Hill of Groton had a RBI single in the fourth inning and stole a base for UConn (14-16).

    • Coast Guard's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game against Wheaton was postponed due to rain.

    It will be played today at Coast Guard's Nitchman Field, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

    • UConn-Avery Point's game against Bunker Hill was postponed. There is no makeup date.

    Softball

    • Three former Waterford High standouts played key roles as Eastern Connecticut State beat Babson 9-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

    Erin Miller (5-4) pitched a one-hitter - the game was called after six innings - with three strikeouts and no walks and Alyssa Hancock and Mattie Brett combined for seven hits, seven RBI and six runs scored. Hancock was 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two doubles, and two RBI and Brett was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, five RBI and two runs scored. ECSU (11-9) won the second game 4-2.

    • Coast Guard's doubleheader with Wesleyan was canceled due to rain.
