Local college roundup: Wheaton beats CGA in baseball
New London - Justin Silvestro hit two home runs and drove in six as No. 23 Wheaton College defeated Coast Guard Academy 25-5 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball game Wednesday.
Lukas Laplante was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Bears (9-15, 4-6) while Cory Sonnega added two doubles and three RBI and Kyle Wood had a pair of hits. Wheaton is 19-6-1, 8-2.
In other games:
• Max McDowell drove in three runs as UConn beat Brown 7-4 in a nonleague game. Bryan Daniello and McDowell had two hits each and Blake Davey hit his team-high fifth home run of the season for UConn (15-16).
Men's tennis
• Coast Guard lost to Babson 8-1 in the NEWMAC. The doubles team of Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna won for Coast Guard.
Softball
• Shannon O'Neil of Mitchell College was named ECAC Div. III New England co-Player of the Week in softball. O'Neil, a sophomore, batted .692 as the Mariners went 4-0 last week. She had four doubles, a home run and six RBI.
