    Local chapter of National Footbal Foundation to honor 17 student-athletes

    The Southeastern Connecticut Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame will hold its annual banquet at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Mohegan Sun. Seventeen scholar-athletes and nine adults will be honored by the foundation.

    "We are very excited to return to the Mohegan Sun for this wonderful event. The Sun is one of the premier venues in the state of Connecticut and their support of our chapter is greatly appreciated," chapter vice president and Ledyard High School head football coach and athletic director Jim Buonocore said in a press release.

    "We have an outstanding lineup of scholar-athletes and adult award winners and this night is a tribute to them as well as a celebration of high school football."

    Scholar-athletes who will be honored are Calvin Green (Norwich Free Academy), Jordan Kowalski (Ledyard), Nathan Kozlowski (Bacon Academy), Adam Davis (Griswold), David Peck (Valley Regional/Old Lyme), Orrin Parke (New London), Jake Wawrzyniak (Coast Guard Academy), Connor Elliott (East Lyme), Anthony Wilkens (Montville), John McGinn (Woodstock Academy), Zane Cooke (Killingly), Seth Hoagland (Waterford), William Kuckel (Plainfield), Joseph Allyn (Fitch), Dakota Fleming (Windham), Zach Poirier (Stonington), Joseph Mariani (St. Bernard).

    Also being recognized are Person of the Year, Don Mackenzie (Boats Inc. vice president and Ledyard High football announcer); Coach of the Year, Tim King (Valley Regional/Old Lyme); Retired Coach, Rich Cavanaugh (Southern Connecticut State University); Dick North Administrator, Ian Neviaser (Valley Regional); Bill Cawley Media Award, Larry Kelley (The Westerly Sun); Officials Award, Kevin Moreland (Eastern Board); Distinguished American, Giancarlo Diangeli (East Lyme); Service Award, Greg Drab (Advantage Personal Training); Service Award, Calvin McCoy (Advantage Personal Training).

    In addition, Montville senior Jeremiah Crowley will receive special recognition for breaking the state's single-game rushing record this fall.
