Mariners in the spotlight

• Mitchell College earned two weekly New England Collegiate Conference baseball honors on Monday, as senior Marc Dorsi was named Player of the Week and sophomore Tyler Shamas was Pitcher of the Week. With Dorsi and Shamas leading the way, the Mariners went 4-1 last week. Dorsi, as shortstop, batted .529 with six RBI and scored six runs while hitting safely in all five games. He has a team-high 18 RBI and 16 runs scored in 24 games this season, batting .316 overall for the Mariners (13-10-1, 7-5). This was the second weekly honor for Shamas, who threw his first shutout this season, beating Daniel Webster, 11-0. He allowed three hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter in seven innings. He's 5-2 overall this season, including 4-0 in NECC play with a league-leading 0.64 earned run average.

• Senior Demetre Lyras was named the NECC Player of the Week for the second time this season in men's lacrosse while goalie J.D. LeMay earned his fourth Rookie of the Week honor. The pair helped the Mariners win their second straight conference championship. Lyras had eight goals in two games, including a career-high six against Albertus Magnus. He also had one assist and went 12-for-17 in faceoffs. He leads the Mariners (7-4, 3-0) in scoring with 26 goals and six assists and tied for first in ground balls with 45. LeMay made 19 saves last week. He has a goals against average of 7.73 on the season and a league-best 146 saves.

Camel highlights

• Connecticut College junior Derek Bertolini has a team-best 35 assists for the men's lacrosse taem, ranking him third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. He also had 16 goals for the Camels (8-5, 4-4). John Hazard has won a league-best 108 face-offs and goalie Bobby Bleistein leads the NESCAC with a 6.82 goals against average.

• The women's lacrosse team will hold Senior Night at 5 p.m. Friday against Bates College. Junior Lowell Abbott is the program's leading active scorer with 76 goals and 12 assists for 88 points. The Camels (4-9, 0-8) are still searching for their first conference win.

• Senior All-American Michael LeDuc will run in his final home meet on Saturday when Conn hosts the Silfen Invitational. LeDuc already has qualified for the New England Division and ECAC Championship in the 5,000 meters.

• The women's water polo team repeated as Division III Collegiate Water Polo Association champions last week. Nicky Jasbon was named the most valuable player while teammates Susan Doetsch and Kelsey Millward made the second team. The Camels will compete in the CWPA Championships starting on April 25 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.

Tracking the Bears

• The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference named Coast Guard Academy freshman Caitlin Piker the women's field athlete of the week in track and field. Piker broke her own school record in the javelin with a toss of 132 feet, three inches. She is ranked 17th in Division III in the javelin.

Around the region

• Anna Maria College's Cristina Turley, a junior from Waterford, recently belted her first collegiate home run in a doubleheader split with Rivier University. She finished four-for-seven with three RBI.

• Three Waterford graduates are leading the way for the Eastern Connecticut State University softball team. Senior outfielder Mattie Brett has a team-best three home runs and ranks second with 22 RBI while batting .434. Sophomore infielder Alyssa Hancock is batting .378 with two home runs and 18 RBI and junior pitcher Erin Miller has a team-best six wins and owns a 2.99 earned run average for the Warriors (15-9).

• Shane and Megan Duplice, two siblings from Waterford, recently competed for different college track programs at the Central Connecticut State University Invitational. Shane, a senior at American International College, had a winning throw of 192 feet, six inches in the javelin and earned Northeast 10 track athlete of the week honors. Megan, a sophomore at CCSU, placed third in the javelin (101-5).

• The Becker College women's lacrosse team is within striking distance of first place in the NECC due in part to the strong play of senior defender Katelin Burdick and senior attack Christina Boucher, two Stonington graduates. Burdick has started 10 of 11 games while Boucher leads the team in goals with 36 and also has two assists. Becker (7-4, 2-0) is in second place.
