Six plays to be developed at National Playwrights Conference

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center has announced the six new plays selected for development at the O'Neill's 50th annual National Playwrights Conference.

    They are:

"Tiger Style!" by Mike Lew; performances at 8:15 p.m. July 2 and 3

Synopsis: "Tiger Style!" examines the successes and failures of tiger parenting from the point of view of a playwright who's actually been through it.

"I'm Gonna Pray For You So Hard" by Halley Feiffer; performances at 7:15 p.m. July 4 and 8:15 p.m. July 5

Synopsis: Ella is a precocious and fiercely competitive actress whose sole aim in life is to make her famous playwright father David proud. Over the course of a boozy, drug-fueled evening, Ella and David deliberate over whether to read the reviews of her off-Broadway debut.

"Ugly Lies the Bone" by Lindsey Ferrentino; performances at 8:15 p.m. July 9 and 10

Synopsis: Jess returns from war severely burned, only to find her Floridian hometown in a state of decay. Through the use of virtual reality video game therapy, she tries to restore her relationships, her home, and all that was lost.

"The Imaginary Music Critic Who Doesn't Exist" by David Mitchell Robinson; performances at 8:15 p.m. July 12 and 7:15 p.m. July 13

Synopsis: Lacey runs an influential music site on the internet - a site that can determine whether an act pops off or becomes an endnote in pop history. But when she uses the site's clout to hype a gifted but controversial MC, it threatens to unravel everything she's built.

"Icarus Burns" by Christopher Oscar Peña; performances at 8:15 p.m. July 16 and 17

Synopsis: In the social landscape of the 2008 American Presidential election, two brothers work to reconcile desire, ambition and integrity; a TV journalist tries to overcome his fear of telling his own story; and a family of new immigrants attempts to fight a cycle of abuse and make a better life.

Bright Half Life" by Tanya Barfield; performances at 7:15 p.m. July 18 and 19

Synopsis: A kaleidoscopic love story, Erika and Vicky are hurled through 25 years of love and heartbreak in a collection of the moments that make up a life.

The six selected works were chosen from a record-breaking pool of more than 1,200 plays received through the O'Neill's open submissions process, which allows any playwright to submit. Readers from across the country chose plays based on merit, without any authorship information.

Playwright Samuel D. Hunter will be in residence during the conference working on a new play. Hunter's "A Great Wilderness" was selected for development at the 2013 conference.

In addition to the seven selected writers at this year's conference, Artistic Director Wendy C. Goldberg also announced that she will direct the readings of "The Imaginary Music Critic Who Doesn't Exist." Trip Cullman will direct Halley Feiffer's "I'm Gonna Pray For You So Hard."
