Court document details Norwich rape case

A 32-year-old Norwich man accused of sexually assaulting a woman he picked up at Mohegan Sun last month admitted he went to the casino that night but said he "blacked out" and didn't remember what had happened.

Demetrius Carswell of 47 Division St., charged April 11 with first-degree kidnapping, first-degre sexual assault, first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree threatening and third-degree assault, is being held in lieu of a $200,000 bond at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center.

Details of the March 30 incident are contained in an arrest warrant affidavit on file in New London Superior Court. His next court date is May 5.

The alleged victim, a 32-year-old woman, told police she became separated from her friends at the casino and asked Carswell for a ride home. She said he drove her to a parking lot behind Big Harry's Discount Liquors at 526 W. Thames St., threatened to shoot her and sexually assaulted her in his minivan. He told her during the attack, "I have AIDS," according to the affidavit.

He drove back toward the casino, stopped at a traffic light on Route 32 and told the woman to "get the (expletive) out of the car," according to the affidavit. The woman said a man picked her up and drove her back to Mohegan Sun, where she called her friends.

The friends notified police, and the woman was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital. She had bruises on her arms and a red spot on her ear where it appeared her hoop earring had been ripped off.

Investigators used surveillance footage to track the woman's movements as she met up with a man inside the casino and left with him in his minivan. They obtained the vehicle's license plate and tracked it to Carswell. Confronted at his home the next morning, he said he didn't remember what happened and thought he might have been drugged.

"Please tell me I didn't kill anyone," he allegedly said to the police.

Carswell said he had been drinking with his girlfriend the night before and she fell asleep on him when he wanted to have sex. He said he went to the casino in frustration.

Police recovered security video from the West Thames Street parking lot and observed a dark colored minivan pulling in and parking in the vicinity pointed out by the victim for 11 minutes, departing at 2:40 a.m.

Police seized Carswell's minivan and found a hoop earring matching one in the victim's possession on the floorboard of the minivan between the front right passenger's seat and passenger's door.

Carswell has no prior criminal record in Connecticut, but public records indicate he was charged with sexual battery in February 2012 in Miami-Dade County in Florida. Specifics of the case, which was discharged in April 2012, were not available.
