Norwich – Police on Tuesday arrested a 20-year-old Montville man on charges connected to a fire that burned a vacant residence at 346 Salem Turnpike.

Alexander G. Drozynski of 1063 Old Colchester Road was charged with third-degree arson, third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and providing a false statement.

Drozynski was charged for his alleged role in starting the Dec. 7 fire. Firefighters from the East Great Plain Fire Department and mutual aid departments arrived that afternoon to find heavy fire in the building. No injuries were reported.

The Norwich Fire Marshal's Office investigated the cause and origin of the fire with assistance from the Norwich Police Department Arson Team and an accelerant detection K-9 team from the state fire marshal's office. The K-9 team alerted to areas both in and outside the home, which helped lead to the conclusion of arson, according to a statement from Norwich Police Sgt. Peter Camp.

The investigation into who started the fire was handled by Officer Robert Smith and Deputy Fire Marshal Lauren Casady.

Drozynski, who is currently being held in prison on numerous unrelated burglary and larceny charges, was served with an arrest warrant during his appearance Tuesday at Norwich Superior Court. He was ordered held in lieu of an additional $200,000 bond.

Police ask anyone with information regarding arsons to call the Norwich Police Department's Tip Line at (860) 886-5561 ext. 500 or the Connecticut Arson Hot Line at (800) 84ARSON.
