More than 40 firefighters battled a brush fire late this afternoon that burned about 3 acres of woods along the New London-Waterford line.
The fire was reported at about 4 p.m. and discovered deep into the woods behind Garfield Avenue and Garfield Avenue Extension, New London Fire Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said.
Firefighters couldn’t reach the blaze with trucks so they walked to it carrying tanks of water. New London firefighters fought the fire from one side and Waterford the other.
“They tried to attack it on their side and they were having trouble getting to it because there was a lot of swamp area,” Curcio said.
New London called a second alarm and Groton provided mutual aid to the city. Despite the wind, the fire was out by 6 p.m.
