As I was watching a series of coming attractions recently, I was struck by how every release seemed to be just an amalgam of computer-generated special effects.

Buildings explode. Well, EVERYTHING explodes. Freaky creatures fly. Freaky creatures fight in the midst of ominous, otherworldly landscapes. It all feels like a glorified video game.

I don’t dislike effects simply because they’re effects. I dislike them because of how much they seem to fuel the vast majority of movies out there these days.

My proposal: Moviemakers go one year — yes, an entire year — without using any special effects.

Imagine. Films would have to rely solely on good storytelling and acting and directing.

I know what Hollywood studios would think: That’s insanity! All that visual craziness entices teenage boys — who are a loyal fan base — and a lot of foreign markets — which is an ever-expanding money source for us!

But I say, give it a try. It’s only a year. Let’s see how creativity can play out in ways that don’t involve CGI.
