Tracking the Bears

• Coast Guard Academy's Jessie Richardson, a junior catcher, was selected to the All-New England first team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She finished among the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference leaders in several categories, ranking first in doubles (14), RBI (34) and batting average (.481), and also played stellar defense.

Camel highlights

• The Connecticut College women's rowing team finished fifth out of seven teams in the grand final of the varsity four in the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championship Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. The Camels took second in the novice eight petit final.

Around the region

• American International College's Shane Duplice, a Waterford High School graduate, has the fourth best javelin mark in the Division II national rankings. His school-record setting throw at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship covered 216 feet, six inches. He also set a meet record.

• Plymouth State University defender Nick Allard, a junior out of Norwich Free Academy, earned All-Little East Conference second team honors. A two-year starter, he helped shut down the opposition's best offensive player.

In other Plymouth news, Niantic's Tucker Regan, a senior baseball player, received one of the school's Panther Awards.

• Rhode Island junior shortstop Katelyn Sykora of Waterford was named to the All-Little East softball first team for the first time. She started 41 games, batting .289 with six doubles, two triples and nine RBI. She also was a defensive standout.

• Troy Powell and Colton Craig, two Ledyard graduates, helpled lead Western New England University to a third straight NCAA tournament bid. Powell, a defensive midfielder, also excelled in the classroom, being inducted into the National College Athletic Honor Society.

Powell, an attackman, scored a career-high 37 goals and had six assists during his senior season. He earned All-Commonwealth Coast Conference honorable mention and scored five goals in a 13-8 upset of Endicott in the CCC championship game. For his efforts, he was named Lacrosse Magazine's player of the week.

• Nick Palermo, a Ledyard graduate, was a four-year starter for the American International College lacrosse team and finished with a team-best 13 caused turnovers and the school's all-time leader in that category.

• Eastern Connecticut State University senior Fredrick Hewett of New London recently broke an eight-year-old school record in the 400 meters. He finished in 48.28 seconds at the All-New England Championships last weekend, beating the old record by just .01 seconds.

Hewett also helped the 4x100 relay team run a school record 42.37 seconds.

• Southern Connecticut State University freshman Shatajah Wattely, a Montville graduate, was named the school's athlete of the week in women's track and field. She helped the Owls achieve runner's up status in the All-New England Championships.

Wattely earned All-New England honors in four events. She ran a lege on the New England record-setting 4x100 relay team that finished first in 46.15 and also competed on the winning 4x400 team. She was second in both the 100 meters (11.61) and 200 (23.87).
