City to honor Cross Sound Ferry crew that rescued 12-year-old canoeist

New London — State and city officials will recognize crew members from Cross Sound Ferry for their roles in rescuing a 12-year-old girl from the Thames River earlier this month.

State Rep. Ernest Hewett, D-New London, will join Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio and the City Council to acknowledge the heroism of the Cross Sound Ferry crew at the City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in City Hall.

On May 4, the 12-year-old Waterford girl was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and Cross Sound Ferry after her aluminum canoe capsized at the entrance to New London Harbor.

Just after 6 p.m., a call came in from someone at Ocean Beach who had seen the girl and her dog in the canoe in choppy water. As the Coast Guard prepared to head to the girl’s location, the canoe capsized, sending her into the 47-degree water.

A Cross Sound ferry found the girl, threw her a life ring and was with her when the Coast Guard boat rescued her. She was in the water for 15 to 20 minutes, a Coast Guard official said.
