• Norwich's Dodd Stadium will host the 2014 Northeastern Conference baseball tournament beginning Thursday. The double-elimination tournament features No. 1 Bryant, the defending champion, against No. 4 Wagner on Thursday at noon followed by No. 2 Central Connecticut vs. No. 3 Sacred Heart at 3:30 p.m. Two more games will be played Friday (noon and 3:30) and two more Saturday, with the championship round at 3:30 p.m. A deciding game, if necessary, will be held on Sunday at noon. Three teams in the field feature players with local ties - Central's Anthony Turgeon (Fitch), Bryant's Tom Gavitt (Wheeler) and Joe Paparelli (Norwich Free Academy) and Wagner's Nolan Long (Waterford). Turgeon, a senior infielder, is batting .286 in 46 games with one home run, 23 runs scored and 19 RBI; Gavitt, a senior first baseman/catcher, is batting .328 in 38 games with six home runs (second on the team), eight doubles, four triples, 29 runs and 29 RBI; Paparelli, a freshman outfielder, has seen limited action; and Long, a freshman righthander, is 3-3 in 11 games (six starts) with one complete game and a 2.98 ERA. Long was also named NEC Rookie of the Week on Monday after pitching five shutout innings to help Wagner defeat Bryant 1-0 and earn the final NEC tourney spot. He walked two and struck out five.

• Three Coast Guard Academy athletes will compete in the NCAA Division III Outoor Track and Field Championships beginning Thursday at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

Senior Adam Scalesse, a five-time All-American in multiple hurdle events, has earned his eighth trip to the nationals (four indoor, four outdoor) and is seeded first in his speciality, the 110-meter high hurdles, with a time of 14.05 seconds. His qualifying race is Friday and the final is scheduled for Saturday at 2:40 p.m. In addition, senior Abby Bishop will make her first appearance in the heptathlon, where she is seeded 12th (4,538 points), and junior Beth Gollin will make her second trip and is seeded 14th in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:50.57). Steeplechase qualifying is Thursday.

• UConn senior center Alex Mateas (Ottawa, Ont.) has been named to the 2014 Spring Watch List by the Rimington Trophy Committee. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA FBS football. Mateas started all 12 games for the Huskies at center in 2013 - one of three Huskies to do that on the offensive line and the only returning player for 2014. He is also a two-time member of the Big East/American Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

• Dana Tricarico of East Lyme was recently honored with the Outstanding Academic Athlete Award at Siena College's 2014 Commencement. Tricarico, who was a member of the Siena swim team for four years, including two years as team captain, also received the Siena College School of Science Award for Excellence in her major of Environmental Studies and graduated Cum Laude.

• Eastern Connecticut State University's Paige Schneider, a freshman from East Lyme, was recently named an All-Little East Conference second team pick in women's lacrosse as a midfielder. Schneider scored 23 goals and two assists for the Warriors, third on the team.
