No, this isn't a posting about sweet, bewitching football. It's about boys' lacrosse. We're branching out here.

Gary Wight isn’t sure how many Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division championships his East Lyme High School boys’ lacrosse team has won.

Perhaps Wight isn’t counting. Perhaps all of the championships have blurred together while coaching the ECC’s premiere boys' lacrosse program. The Vikings have won 10 of the last 11 conference tournament championships and are the only program to win a CIAC state title (2004, Division II).

East Lyme beat Woodstock Academy on Tuesday, 10-1, to clinch its something-or-rather straight ECC Large Division title. The Vikings (11-3) repeated despite heavy graduation losses, including all of its attackers.

“We’ve been gradually getting better,” Wight said. “We’ve been lucky to have players step into (their new roles). We’ve prepared with a good schedule.”

Wight credited his team’s senior leadership. The senior co-captains are Jacob Gordon (defense), Nic Page (attacker) and goalie Greg Swenson, the latter who is a two-time All-ECC pick.

“The seniors are a pretty good group of kids, and we have a strong junior class,” Wight said. “Page, Gordon and Swenson are good leaders. … We’re balanced. We haven’t been scoring tremendously a lot, but we’re very balanced. One game it might be Griffin Woods, who had four goals (Tuesday). Then Page might score four in another. Then the next game it’s all by committee.

“I’m happy with the direction that we’re going.”

East Lyme closes its season out with home games against Fitch (Thursday) and Guilford (Saturday) and gets to defend its league championship next week.

The Vikings are currently third in the Class M rankings behind unbeaten Darien (ranked fifth nationally in laxpower.com’s computer ratings) and fellow Fairfield County power New Canaan (13-3).
