The Day’s 2013 coverage of, among other things, the February 2013 blizzard, the Amistad and the 17-year emergence of cicadas was recognized Thursday by the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Day received 38 awards in all for stories, opinion columns, photographs, videos and page layout. The awards were announced at the annual awards banquet in Wallingford.

Sasha Goldstein received first place in investigative story for his reports on traffic stops in New London and whether race plays a factor in whom the police decide to pull over.

Anna Isaacs placed first in general reporting for her story on a World War II sailor’s shirt found buried in the sand on Fishers Island.

Isaacs, David Collins, Claire Bessette, Joe Wojtas and Kimberly Drelich placed first for spot news reporting on the February 2013 blizzard. Jill Blanchette’s front page layout for that story received second place, and Tim Cook’s photo of the blizzard placed second in the news photo category.

Collins was awarded first place for an opinion column questioning the state’s continued funding of the Amistad.

Peter Huoppi was first in video storytelling for the mass emergence of cicadas after 17 years underground, while Carlos Diaz placed second and third in the same category for “Alice Acres” and “Emilie’s Shady Spot playground,” respectively.

In photography, Tim Martin received first place for a feature photo of a fashion show. Tim Cook placed first in the news photo category for his image of a fire chief talking to a distraught man sitting on a bridge support under the Gold Star Bridge.

Dana Jensen received first place in photo layout for her images of a bus trip that members of the Newtown Action Alliance took to Washington, D.C., to push for gun control legislation. Jensen also placed first in sports photo for the image of a Waterford High School baseball player sliding into home plate.

Jennifer McDermott was first in business reporting for a story on changes to the Electric Boat workforce.

Maria Reagan was first for page layout of “A world of flavor.” Jenna Cho and Jill Blanchette received a third place award for that story in the arts and entertainment reporting category.
