Coast Guard Academy's Adam Scalesse advanced to the finals of the 111-meter high hurdles during his qualifying race Friday at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio.

Scalesse, who qualified for the nationals by running the fastest time in the nation this spring (14.05 seconds), cruised during qualifying, winning his heat in 14.21 seconds, although his earlier time was eclipsed by Salisbury's Luke Campbell, who ran a 13.91 to win his qualifying heat. The final is today at 2:40 p.m.

Three other local athletes will also be competing in finals today. Connecticut College senior Michael LeDuc will attempt to defend his title in the men's 3,000 steeplechase at 1:20 p.m., while Coast Guard junior Beth Gollin and Williams College's Brianne Mirecki, a senior from East Lyme, will compete in the women's 3,000 steeplechase at 1. Gollin qualified ninth (10:51.01) and Mirecki 13th (11:00.1).

On Friday, Coast Guard senior Abby Bishop finished 13th in the hepathlon with 4,515 points. Bishop, who began the day in 18th place, competed in the long jump (5.18 meters), javelin (92 feet, 3 inches) and 800 (2:21.50).

In addition, Conn freshman Bella Franz broke her own school record in the 800 (2:11.01), but placed 10th and failed to qualify for today's final.
