Mallove murder trial scheduled for September

A man who was retrieved from a federal prison last year to face murder charges in the 2004 beating death of physicist Eugene Mallove could go on trial in September.

Mozzelle Brown, 40, is charged with murder, felony murder, first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Mallove’s death. The 56-year-old New Hampshire scientist had was beaten to death on May 14, 2004, as he cleaned out his childhood home on Salem Turnpike in Norwich.

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci said in New London Superior Court Wednesday that he would be speaking with Mallove’s survivors about the case and would extend a plea offer to Brown in August. Should Brown reject the offer, the case would go on trial in early September.

Brown was serving a 15-year federal sentence for drug and firearm offenses when Norwich police retrieved him last year from an Ohio prison.

Police allege Brown and his cousin, Chad M. Schaffer, attacked Mallove because he was throwing out items that belonged to Schaffer’s parents, who recently had been evicted from the home. Police say the two men left the critically injured Mallove and returned later with Schaffer’s girlfriend, Candace Foster, who said Schaffer forced her to partake in the continued beating of Mallove as he begged for help.

Schaffer pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter in the midst of his trial in 2012 and is serving a 16-year prison sentence. Foster, who is charged with Mallove’s murder but continues to cooperate with the state with the hope of leniency, remains incarcerated at the Janet S. York Correctional Institution.
